Dental Hygiene Senior Appointed to Floresville City Council

“My late father, Gerard Jimenez, was a voice for the citizens”, says Jade Jimenez, Dental Hygiene Senior at ’s School of Dentistry. On Monday, January 13, 2020 and after a unanimous vote, Jade was honored by being appointed to the Floresville City Council. Upon her appointment, Jade became a record breaker as well by being the youngest Hispanic female to sit on city council in Floresville, Texas. The appointment to City Council Place 4, is a step towards healing for the Jimenez family and the city of Floresville.

Meet the Staff: Martha Browning

For the past 30 years, Martha Browning has made service to students her life’s work.  Martha is an Academic Programs Coordinator for the Dental Hygiene Program in the Department of Periodontics.  During her tenure in the School of Dentistry, Martha has become vital to the success of both the dental hygiene faculty and students.

Jo Ann Jordan, director of the Dental Hygiene program, describes Martha as a wonderful team member.  “She and I work very well together, in fact, she’s been with us long enough that we finish one another’s sentences!”


San Antonio ASDA Helps Prepare Pre-Dental Students for Dental School Interviews

Preparing for entry into any professional education program is tough, but the San Antonio Chapter of the American Student Dental Association lends a hand assisting predental students prepare for admission season. Held annually, the ADSA’s Pre-Dental Mock Interview Day is a half-day event for pre-dental students to meet School of Dentistry faculty and dental students, receive information on our programs, and practice their admission interviewing skills with dental students. Alumna featured for participation in national HPV study

Risé Martin, D.D.S., class of 1985, was featured on KSAT 12 News for her involvement in a human papillomavirus (HPV) study headed by the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). David L. Cochran, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of periodontics, is the PBRN's director of the southwest region. Dental Hygiene Students Teach Oral Health to Heroes & Villians

Dental Hygiene student members of the San Antonio Dental Hygiene Association provided oral hygiene instruction and handed out goodies to super heroes, witches, unicorns, and so many other fantastical characters at the Any Baby Can Halloween party on October 22, 2019. Dental Student Receives National Dental Research Award

The San Antonio Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research invited Julie T. Marchesan, D.D.S., Ph.D., as guest speaker for their 2019 Fall Dinner Lecture held on October 16, 2019. Dr. Marchesan is assistant professor at the Adams School of Dentistry’s Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With an extensive training in oral health sciences, Dr. Marchesan’s research focus is primarily on the role of innate immune receptors in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Dental Hygiene and DDS Students Team Up for Community Service

Toyota Field hosted the 2019 Autism Speaks Walk in San Antonio to raise awareness and fundraise for research and support services for individuals diagnosed with autism. The Special Care Dental Association and the San Antonio Dental Hygiene Association joined forces to host a booth at the event. The Special Care Dental Association (SCDA) supplied dental goodie bags that included a tooth brush, toothpaste, and oral health information in English and Spanish. Also, SCDA managed the booth setup.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Rosanne Fohn, public relations representative in the Office of Marketing, Communications & Media, the School of Dentistry has been all over the news this week. Dean Peter M. Loomer and Kelli Jimerson, DS3, were interviewed by KSAT 12 News due to the new educational standards announced by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The new guidelines will make all U.S. dental schools update their programs to be inclusive of patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Click the link to watch the clip.

AGDC Wins 2019 Spirit Week Selfie Challenge

The gauntlet was thrown and the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic gladly accepted the challenge. With 31 shares on Facebook, AGDC residents, faculty, and staff won the 2019 Spirit Week Selfie Challenge! Lupita Gomez, Academic Programs Coordinator for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program, shared that everyone in the clinic had a great time preparing for this year's challenge.

Endodontics Receives $5.1M in New Grant Funding

NIDCR Ranks School of Dentistry 12th in U.S. for FY18

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) released its rank listing of funding to U.S. dental institutions for FY 2018. The School of Dentistry ranked 12th, jumping 8 spots from number 20 in FY 2017. The overall FY 2018 funding amount was documented at $3,805,147, eclipsing the previous year’s funding by over a million dollars. Dr. Brij Singh, Associate Dean of Research, remarked that “Our goal was to be in the top 15 dental schools by 2020; we are really proud of our faculty and leadership.

Pilot Project Program Awardees

A new funding opportunity in the School of Dentistry, created and sponsored by the Office of the Dental Dean, was announced in July of 2019. Its purpose is to provide funding for faculty to generate pilot data that will be used for submitting future grant proposals. Members of the research community evaluated and ranked 10 competitive submissions, of which, four were funded. Dental Faculty Sweep 2019 Faculty Senate Awards

The UTHSA Faculty Senate held a meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at which they presented awards to Dr. Adriana Segura and Dr. Suman Challa, both School of Dentistry leaders. Dr. Segura was presented with the 2019 Administration Leadership Award, due to her outstanding management through the past few years. In her presentation speech, Dr. Stefanie Seitz, Assistant Dean of Students in the School of Dentistry, spoke on how Dr. Segura took on the new position of Associate Dean for , Faculty and Student Affairs in 2017.
