2019 Japanese Exchange Program, U.S.A. Visit
This August, the School of Dentistry welcomed 10 Japanese dental students and 1 dental faculty for a week-long visit observing our dental program and enjoying the central Texas sights. For the past 24 years, dental students from Asahi University and their sister institution, Meikai University, have traveled to San Antonio to observe our senior dental students in clinic and experience Texas’ hospitality.

Summer Student Research Program
This summer, 19 participating students under the guidance of 16 faculty mentors, worked on their respective summer research projects. In addition to diligently conducting their work during break, each student prepared a short presentation for their fellow participants to wrap their summer session on June 26th.
Faculty Advisors Meet & Greet - 2019
On Wednesday, August 7th, the School of Dentistry Faculty hosted the Class of 2023 for the annual Faculty Advisors Meet & Greet. Each first year dental student was paired and had dinner with their faculty advisor.
Dental School can be overwhelming from time to time, so these faculty members commit to being available to their students in order to guide them through both the highs and lows of their academic journey ahead.

2019 Welcome Social
On Monday, July 29, 2019 the School of Dentistry hosted a Welcome Social for the Dental Hygiene Classes of 2020, 2021, and the DDS Class of 2023. Held annually, the social is an opportunity for the dental and dental hygiene students to interact socially with one another, meet school administration, and reflect on the year ahead.
2019 IADR: Dr. Diogenes Receives High Honor & Students Present Research
The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held their annual meeting and exhibition on June 19 – 22, 2019 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. School of Dentistry’s research faculty and students traveled to present their research, attend the distinguished lecture series, and network with the international dental research community.
Dental Care in Guatemala
According to The World Factbook, a site managed by the Central Intelligence Agency, over 50% of the Guatemalan population live below the national poverty line, with about 23% experiencing extreme poverty. With so many families struggling to meet their basic needs, oral healthcare is far from a priority and tooth decay is a massive problem throughout the country. Thanks to the efforts of the Open Wide Foundation, hope and health is now a possibility.

2019 Senior Awards
On Monday, May 13, 2019, The School of Dentistry held their annual Senior Convocation Ceremony at the La Quinta Inn & Suites medical center location. Breakfast was served and coffee was poured in preparation for the recognition of a long list of well-deserving and outstanding students.
46th Annual OKU Mu Nu Chapter Convocation
Held at the Petroleum Club of San Antonio on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, the Mu Nu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) celebrated their 46th annual convocation. Three categories of membership in this prestigious dental honor society include: alumni, faculty, and honorary.
2019 SoD Commencement Ceremony
The º£½ÇÂ×ÂÒ School of Dentistry’s Class of 2019 assembled for their Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Dr. Peter M. Loomer, Professor and Dean, presided the ceremony and greeted the graduating class by naming them as his new colleagues and acknowledged their outstanding patient care, scientific discovery, service to the community, and advocacy for oral health.
2019 Predoctoral Convocation Awards
The 2019 Predoctoral Convocation Awards were held on May 1, 2019 recognizing the accomplishments of freshmen, sophomore, and junior dental students.
Zeki Abdulaali, DS3, was awarded the º£½ÇÂ×ÂÒ Ambassador Scholarship. This honor is given every year to one outstanding student from each of the five UTHSA schools. A $5,000 scholarship was awarded to each ambassador in April. Zeki will represent the dental student body and the university at numerous events throughout AY 19-20.
The 2019 AACMFS Annual Meeting Held in San Antonio
The American Academy of CranioMaxillofacial Surgeons (AACMFS) held its annual meeting in San Antonio on May 9 – 10, 2019. AACMFS members from around the nation assembled for presentations on the latest clinical and research findings, as well as discussions on innovative craniomaxillofacial surgery recommendations.

The º£½ÇÂ×ÂÒ dental community assembled on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 for the 37th Annual Dental Science Symposium. This yearly event showcases dental research in basic science, public health, clinical science, and education.
