These are limited submission opportunities. The HSC may nominate one applicant per program announcement. Please follow instructions below to be considered for nomination.
The Institution is invited each year to select one candidate each for a few highly distinguished awards targeted to outstanding early career investigators – specifically, the Pew and Searle Scholars Programs and Mallinckrodt Research Grants program. Each target faculty in the first 1-4 years of their initial tenure track appointment, and offer $60-100K/year grants for 3-4 years. While the grants are modest in size, they carry very high prestige, and can greatly enhance the early careers of the recipients more than the monetary value would reflect. For example, among Pew Scholar alumni alone there are already 3 Nobelists, multiple Lasker Award winners, and large numbers of National Academy members and Howard Hughes Investigators.
Please encourage your outstanding junior faculty to apply for these opportunities. There will be a rigorous internal selection process followed by significant mentoring for the selected candidate to craft the most competitive proposal. The deadline for internal nominations is JUNE 3rd!
HSC Nomination Process:
Interested applicants should complete the Early Career Biomedical Research Limited Submissions application via the following REDCap form, . Applications are due no later than 11:59 PM on Wednesday, June 3, 2019.
Application packet consists of:
• a full CV (including all publications and other support)
• description of contributions to science (1 page)
• description of five-year vision for research in your lab (1 page)
• list of three distinguished people who could provide reference letters
• a letter of support from the nominee’s Department Chair.
If only one application packet is received, he/she will be the candidate to submit a full application on behalf of the university. If more than one internal nomination is received, the nominations will be submitted to the special review committee chaired by Dr. Bruce Nicholson for final candidate selection. 2020 Pew Biomedical Scholars Program
If nominated, Application Deadline: October 10, 2019
Award: $75,000 per year for four years
The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.
An award of $75,000 per year will be provided to the sponsoring institution for use by the Scholar over the four-year period, subject to annual review of the Scholar’s progress. The funds may be used, at the discretion of the Pew Scholar, for personnel, equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to the Scholar's research as to best advance their research and career. Not more than $15,000 of the annual award may be used for the Scholar's salary (including benefits).
Eligibility
Candidates must have been awarded a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine or related field. As of October 15, 2018, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor. (Appointments such as Research Assistant Professor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor Research Track, Visiting Professor or Instructor are not eligible.) On June 14, 2019, candidates must have been in such an appointment for less than three years (not appointed before June 14, 2016), whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, or in work toward board certification does not count as part of this three-year limit. Candidates may be nominated by their institution two times in total. ALL applicants must be nominated by their institution and must complete the 2020 online application.

2020 Searle Scholars Program
If nominated, Application Deadline: September 27, 2019
Award: $100,000 per year for three years
The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding young scientists who have recently joined the tenure-track faculty. Eligible applicants are expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences. The Searle Scholars Program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components.
Eligibility
· Candidates should have begun their first appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2018. This appointment must be their first tenure-track position (or its nearest equivalent) at an invited institution. Final HSC candidate application must be received via the Searle Scholars Program’s online submission system by September 27, 2019.

2020 Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation – Mallinckrodt Grants
If nominated, Application Deadline: August 1, 2019
Award: $60,000 per year for three years
The Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation is a private foundation that funds basic biomedical research in St. Louis and throughout the United States. The mission of the Foundation is to support early stage investigators engaged in biomedical research that has the potential to significantly advance the understanding, diagnosis, or treatment of disease. Funds are designed to provide support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained.
Applicants should be faculty members who hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees, and in the first to fourth year of their tenure track faculty position and not have current R01 funding. Applicants with current R01 funding should not apply.
