Dr. Bennett T. Amaechi Presented with 2019 Presidential Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching

Bennett T. Amaechi, B.D.S., M.Sc, Ph.D., MFDSRCPS (Glasg), FADI, a Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was presented with a Presidential Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching on March 7, 2019. Dr. Amaechi joined the School of Dentistry faculty in November of 2001 as the Director of Cariology, a title he continues to hold 18 years later. In addition, he directs two undergraduate patient care courses and assists in three preclinical laboratory courses in both operative dentistry and prosthodontics.


Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves Awarded $6 Million Department of Defense Grant

Ken Hargreaves, Professor and Chair in the Department of Endodontics, recently received a $6 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a new class of non-opioid, non-addictive analgesics. This class of drugs is being developed for treating combat causality burns that often occurs due to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In addition, about 2 million burn injuries occur yearly in the U.S. civilian population, with ~15% requiring hospitalization.


2019 Faculty Promotions and Tenure

During the February 2019 UT System Board of Regents meeting, several of the º£½ÇÂ×ÂÒ's promotion and tenure applications were reviewed. We are proud to announce the following dental faculty were awarded promotion and/or tenure.

• Armen Akopian, Ph.D. from the Department of Endodontics was awarded Professor with Tenure.

• Anibal Diogenes, D.D.S., Ph.D. from the Department of Endodontics was awarded Professor with Tenure.

• Rujuta Katkar, B.D.S., M.S. from the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry was awarded Associate Professor with Tenure.


15th Annual School of Dentistry Golf Scholarship Tournament

The 15th Annual School of Dentistry’s Golf Scholarship Tournament was held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Silverhorn Golf Club. 62 participants, including several School of Dentistry leaders and sponsor representatives, arrived early on a cool, spring morning to enjoy a round of golf and raise funds for dental student scholarships. This year’s event raised over $19,000 for the Last Man Standing Scholarship Endowment and the School of Dentistry Memorial Scholarship.
