Technology innovation in patient care: Mobile check-in stations at UT Dentistry

UT Dentistry has initiated the use of new mobile check-in stations. These stations will help streamline patient check-in and check-out, while improving the patient experience. Currently, eight mobile check-in stations are being used in the Predoctoral clinic. These innovative stations involve the use of a cart with its own power supply allowing them to operate untethered. The cart also carries a low-power printer, laptop, signature pad and credit card reader. While using these stations, clinical staff are able to conduct appointment check-ins, appointment bookings and financial transactions chairside, at the point of care. UT Dentistry has reported several direct benefits to their patients, such as a decrease in patient wait time and clinical treatment time, which also benefits their providers. Patients also receive more face-to-face communication with the staff. The overall feedback from patients is that they feel this new process is much more individualized, improving their appointment experience. “This unique deployment of technology at the point of patient care has lead to significant efficiencies in the workflow and time management in clinical care for these clinics,” said Gary Guest, DDS, Associate Dean for Patient Care.
