Oral and maxillofacial surgery wins the 2023 Daniel M. Laskin Award

The Daniel M. Laskin award was established in recognition of Dr. Laskin’s many years as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and his development of the specialty, which has set an example for other oral and maxillofacial surgeons to follow.

The Laskin Award recognizes the most outstanding article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery each year.

Digitally published on June 22, 2022, “Most Facial Fractures Do Not Require Surgical Intervention,” was awarded the 2023 Laskin Award for best manuscript.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the percentage of patients who required surgical intervention after presenting to a Level 1 Trauma Center with one or more facial fractures.

"This was a group effort with residents and faculty. I am so proud that all our hard work paid off!" said Dr. Ellis.

Congratulations to the study’s authors including oral and maxillofacial surgery residents Mary Katherine Spinella, DMD, MD; Jason P. Jones, DDS, MD, and Megan A. Sullivan, DMD, MD; faculty Felix Jose Amarista, DDS, assistant professor, and Edward Ellis III, DDS, MS, professor and department chair.
