The 2021 Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association’s (TDHA) Student Conference took place on Saturday, February 27th. Keeping with tradition, a video challenges were issued for students to create content with this year’s theme: Lighting the Way. As defenders of the 2020 winner’s title, School of Dentistry TDHA student members got to work. Each school’s student group was asked to show the past, present, and future of both their program and the profession of dental hygiene itself. Sara Kneip, senior dental hygiene student and Student American Dental Hygienists’ president, was excited to present their videos to the Association. “We tried to depict how far dental hygiene has come,” she explains. “From wearing dresses and no gloves to today where we could, hopefully in the near future, be administering local anesthetic.” Leslie Sanchez, senior dental hygiene student, was lead creator of the “Lighting the Way” video. These videos were not judged in contest this year, instead they were presented to highlight student members from each school. A TikTok challenge was issued, however, with a call to create a short video demonstrating a “Day in the life” of a dental hygiene student. This challenge replaced the annual costume contest members usually participate in. Several dental hygiene juniors and seniors were directed in the TikTok video, created by Brittany Asencio, which humorously illustrates the challenges of being a student during a pandemic. The video submissions were judged by followers of the TDHA’s social media accounts, and the School of Dentistry took first place for their “Day in the life” submission. Scholarships were also announced at the annual meeting and three School of Dentistry dental hygiene students were awarded: • Bianca Ferdin- Texas Dental Placement Network Scholarship • Seleny Arreola- Carus Dental Scholarship • Meghan Henzie- Omega Seminars Jan Smith Memorial Scholarship Congratulations to all the awardees and video participants.
