Kenneth M. Hargreaves, DDS, PhD<p>Professor & Chair, Endodontics
The British Dental Association (BDA) has shared the results of a survey its members participated in to select the most influential dental textbooks from the past 100 years. Among the 8 categories evaluated, “Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp” won the endodontics category with a substantial 77.8% vote. Originally published in 1976, the 12th edition of the text has been edited by Kenneth M. Hargreaves, DDS, PhD, professor and chair of the department of endodontics at the School of Dentistry, and Louis H. Berman, DDS, FACD. This most recent edition is scheduled to be available by October of this year. Commenting on the results of the endodontics category, the BDA states that based on their respondents, “Cohen’s book has obviously stood the test of time to become an indispensable work for all dental practitioners.” The BDA surveyed its members for their vote in the categories of dental public health, endodontics, dental implants, orthodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, and other worthy titles to seek in naming the ultimate dental book since 1920. The ultimate dental book title category is still accepting responses from members, however, when the survey responses were shared, “Scully’s Medical Problems in Dentistry” by Crispian Scully, MD, PhD, held the top spot with 41.7% of the vote. The full survey results can be reviewed in their entirety on the BDA's website.
