2020 Innovations in Health Science Education Conference

The 2020 Innovations in Health Science Education Conference of the Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy was held in Austin on February 27th and 28th. This annual event is sponsored by The University of Texas System’s six health science campuses and the theme of the year was “Celebrate Education”. Several School of Dentistry faculty and students represented by presenting their work during the conference. Drs. David Ojeda, Don Shaw, and Michaell Huber partnered with Long School of Medicine faculty members, Drs. Sadie Trammell Velasquez, Deborah Chang, Jeff Jackson, Diane Ferguson, and Cristina Grijalva, to present “HENT to HENOT – Integrating Medicine and Dentistry”, speaking to interprofessional initiatives between the two schools. Dr. Ahmed Sabbah presented a workshop entitled “Electronic Global Clinical Evaluation for Competency, Calibration and Outcomes Assessment”, while DS4 students, Kelsey Reyes presented her poster “Utilizing Technology to Teach with Interactive Cases” and Samantha Whitten presented “Ten-Year Retrospective Analysis of Outcomes of Predoctoral Surgical Implant Selective”. Sam Asthana, DS4, was announced as a finalist for his poster, “Comparing Potential Predictors of Dental Student Clinical Success”. His faculty mentor is Dr. Rita Parma, associate professor and director of the International Dentist Education Program. In a special ceremony, Dr. Gregory Spackman, professor in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, was inducted as a member of the UT System’s Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education by Dr. Shine himself. More than 100 educators in the UT System have been inducted into the Academy. Any of the six health science institutions are eligible to submit nominations for membership, which usually come from the Presidents, Deans, or the Faculty Senate.
